All in a day’s work!

I am a people’s person and I love speaking. Especially on stage.. with a mic! I was invited by a prominent engineering college in the region to conduct a quiz for their annual Fest… Also ended up being one of the judges for their rock-band competition.. A brief account of the “day”..

4.00 AM: Wake up. Brush. Morning ablutions. Get ready. Gulp down tea quickly. Leave for the station.

5.00 AM: The train journey: “Shatabdi Express” .. Comfortable chair-car. Good leg space. Decent breakfast. Along with tea and an improved personal perception of the “Indian Railways,” I go through the day’s Times of India and The Telegraph.

9.45 AM: I reach Dhanbad. A couple of students from the college are there to receive me. I am reminded of my sophomore year, when I used to go and receive “guests” and other dignitaries from the station when I was a student! πŸ˜› ..

BIT Sindri

11.00 AM: I reach the college. I am first taken to the guest house. Relax. Have a bath. Get ready and a couple of students walk me around the campus. I click some pictures like this one here —->

12: 00 PM: I am happy with the “warm welcome.” Quiz gets underway. There are participants from a few other colleges in the region. The “level” of the quiz is higher than what a friend and I expected. Some real “toughies” are answered!

3.30 PM: Huh! Quiz finally over. Results are declared. People are happy – “Sir, Very good quiz.. Next year fir aana hai aapko” (You have to come again next year!) ..

ME: “Sure! Why not?.. U pay.. I come!”

4.00 PM: Back to the guest house. Have my lunch and take a short nap – a much-needed commodity right now!

5.30 PM: Woken up by the students. Time for the ROCK SHOW! – I am as excited about it as they are.. Although I’m sure the music wouldn’t be half as good as some of the other fests I’ve seen in the region – SF as well as the ones at BIT Mesra! – Anyway, it’s a band and live music.. However good / bad, I am reminded of my own college / band days! – So i head out! .. All set! Xenium 2008

6.00 – 9.00 PM: One of the very few college-fest rock shows in which i am NOT a participant. This one’s special. My first as a judge! .. The quality of performances is okay-ish – Some good. Others not. One marvellous guitarist and half a decent drummer. (For obvious reasons, I’m a little too critical of drummers. I am no Mike Portnoy, but I have good rhythm sense and an ear for minute errors as far as percussion is concerned!)

9.30 PM: All my bags are packed and I’m ready to go – Time to say bye-bye! The results of the rock-show are announced and I make a special mention about the guitarist – he played Black Sabbath, Maiden.. even Coldplay very accurately!

“Please Gimme my cheque and call for my car, Thank you!” πŸ˜‰

11.30 PM: Back on Indian Railways. I show my ticket. I ask the attendant for my linen / blanket. Lay my bed on the upper berth.. and CRASH!

  1. @ Anonymous..

Whoz this? .. It’s not as “grand” as it sounds..! … it was a “chhhota-mota” quiz.. and a rather amatuer rock-show.. but it was fun.. had never been on the other side of college fests! πŸ˜‰

    @ Andy: Thanks! πŸ™‚

@ Siddharth .. Cryptic as eva! .. I’ll have to check up the meaning of “achiral” …

  2. @ Abhishek,

Thanks! yeah.. Bosco was where it all started! πŸ˜€ … I rarely get time for stuff like this now.. But in a way, it’s good these days are few and far apart.. Adds to the “novelty” factor! πŸ˜‰

  3. When I was a kiddo, I used to have Derek O Brien as my role model. Inspired by him, I organized quizzing sessions at school in morning prayer assembly. And quizzes would always generate energetixc responses from otherwise sleeping crowd that had students, teachers and even Principal.

But that I am adult, I find few such opportunity to conduct quizzes. I would try to create some. πŸ˜› But I am glad you are going it, it is evident that you love it. πŸ™‚

  4. @ Arvind:

  5. Aah, refreshingly beautiful. The pic reminds me of Jharkhand. In fact, today is a first for me – going to recruit. Seems like I was on the other side not so long ago.

Oh, and keeping up with the tradition of pointing out mistakes- here’s one: rock-bend or Rock Band?
